Verlander In 'Win-Win' Situation As Trade Deadline Nears

Jul 30, 2017 10:14 PM

With the trade deadline a day away, Justin Verlander considers himself in a win-win situation as he wouldn't mind staying with the Tigers and has control over which teams can acquire him.

Verlander pitched six scoreless innings Sunday against the Astros in what could be his last start for the Tigers.

Asked afterward if he considers himself in a win-win situation, he said "that's probably a good assessment."

Adrian Beltre Joins 3,000-Hit Club

Jul 31, 2017 6:24 PM

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has become the 31st member of the 3,000-hit club, thanks to a double in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the Orioles.

The milestone hit came on a 3-0 count against left-handed pitcher Wade Miley. Beltre struck out swinging in his first at-bat.

After Beltre's double, his three children ran out to right-center field to reveal a banner commemorating his 3,000 hits on the wall in front of the Rangers bullpen. Beltre's teammates also joined him on the field to recognize his achievement.

Beltre, in his 20th big league season, is the first player to reach the 3,000-hit milestone while a member of the Rangers and the first player born in the Dominican Republic to accomplish the feat.

Patience also played a part for Zach Britton, because the Orioles closer went more than 14 weeks this season between tying the mark and breaking it.

Britton converted his 55th straight save opportunity Sunday, blanking the Astros in the ninth inning to seal Baltimore's 9-7 victory.

Quintana was outstanding in striking out 12 Orioles over seven innings while surrendering only three hits without issuing a walk. It propelled the Cubs to an 8-0 win and a series sweep.
